National Tap Dance Day falls on May 25 every year and is a celebration of tap dancing as an American art form. National Tap Dance Day was ...signed into American law by President George H.W. Bush on November 8, 1989.[1] [It] was the brainchild of Carol Vaughn, Nicola Daval, and Linda Christensen. They deemed May 25 appropriate for this holiday because it is the birthday of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, a significant contributor to tap dance. (Source: Wikipedia). Take It Away Dance and The Philadelphia Community Tap Project are hosting a National Tap Dance Day celebration on Wednesday, May 25, 7-8 pm, at Passyunk Square's Singing Fountain, South 11th St. and Passyunk Avenue. We are planning a few short sets, accompaniment by Drum Like a Lady, challenges and of course, the shim sham! If you'd like to get involved, please email us at takeitawaydance@gmail.com. You can bring a board, an instrument, your shoes or suggest something for the program. Suggesting ideas, volunteering and just spreading the word is much appreciated!
This event has been approved by PARC (Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corporation).
